Georgia and Michael’s spring wedding at Runa Farm, Barnard Castle in Durham, was full of the sweetest emotions and interactions. From quiet getting-ready moments through to everyone dancing together to a live band, the day felt relaxed, sociable and full of joy.
That feeling was present from the moment I arrived. I joined Georgia and her bridal party as they were finishing getting ready, to capture a few in-between moments before she shared an emotional first look with her dad and grandparents. The bridal room was dimly lit with an orange ambient glow, contrasting the bright direct light from the French doors. In turn, this contrast created a more dramatic, emotive feel, particularly during the portraits and family reactions.

Georgia shared an emotional first look with her dad, followed by her grandparents, and it was one of the most memorable moments from their day. Their reactions were so sweet to witness – you could really feel the pride, joy and love they all share for one another. There is something so special about photographing first look moments, because they are never rushed. It’s as if time just stands still for a moment, and emotions flood to the surface. A rush of excitement, admiration, nerves, and love. There was a lovely moment i’ve included below, where Georgia’s grandad was sat on the sofa opposite Georgia and I went behind him to capture a photo of her from his point of view. I think it’s these varied perspectives that add the most dimension to galleries – it paints a wider view of the moments and deepens the emotions. Because you’re not just seeing them literally happen directly from the ‘photographers’ point of view, but each other’s vantage points too.

Before heading into the ceremony, I captured a few quick photos of Michael, his son and his best men. During all the excitement of greeting guests and the kids running excitedly around the venue, it was nice for them to have a short few moments together before the ceremony. We put aside 5 minutes for him and his best men and it made for some really lovely interactions. It’s not just doing it for the photos, but it actually means you can spend some time together after greeting all your guests, to check-in, have a laugh, quick pep talk and calm those nerves before the ceremony.

The ceremony space at Runa Farm was full of warmth and ambience. Although there is no natural light, it made the ceremony feel close-knit and homely. Georgia and Michael had their confetti moments captured during their exit, which was such a lovely change from capturing it outdoors. It also worked out perfectly because they did a mid-isle pause for another first kiss (stood directly under the main chandelier!), and guests sat further in the isle waited to throw their confetti. Perfect, divine timing! After the confetti, Georgia and Michael stepped upstairs to have a few quiet moments together before later joining their guests for the drinks reception. I waited until they were just out the door and quietly captured one of my favourite moments, Georgia looking back at all of their guests. That familiar glance you take when saying goodbye, as if to linger in the moment a little longer with the people who matter most.

After the Ceremony, guests made their way over to the outdoor area for drinks, games and canapés. Despite it being spring, we were so lucky to have summer heat. The weather was stunning, and made for the most gorgeous lighting during their family and couple portraits. The energy during the drinks reception suggested such a closeness between family and friend groups. Lots of drinking, that naturally results in even more story sharing, laughter and banter.

Before heading off to their wedding breakfast and speeches, we spent around 10 minutes capturing their couple portraits and another 10 minutes after dining, for some family moments between Georgia and Michael and their two children. The sun was so bright and hot, and similar to Georgia’s getting-ready moments, it made for some wonderful lighting conditions and contrasts in the photos. Although I’d recommend having photos with any children/guests before food (to avoid marks on clothes!), it can sometimes work out better to have them after food if the gap between getting ready moments and dinner is closer together. Kids usually have a final burst of energy after eating, so you can lean into their playful and excitable energy easier.

Shortly after their couple portraits, Georgia and Michael headed back inside the venue for speeches and their sit-down meal. The speeches were a hit, with the Groomsmen creating lots of laughter, and Georgia’s Dad getting the tears flowing. As the evening unfolded, the day continued just as it had begun. Un-rushed and full of connection. Georgia and Michael spent time with their family and friends, catching up, laughing, and simply enjoying their day together (which is exactly how it should be!)
It’s always a joy to photograph weddings that are deeply rooted in family connection, as you can feel the emotion long before you even lift the camera. Georgia and Michael’s wedding was quaint and simple, made warm and deeply personal by their close-knit circle. And often, it’s that very simplicity that creates space for the most meaningful moments to quietly shine through. And in turn, make for the loveliest and more personal photographs.
